The Meaning Behind the Name

Five Saints Distilling isn’t named for myth or marketing. It’s named for five men, a father, three uncles, and a stepfather, who lived their lives in service to others. Their callings were different: police officer, firefighter, craftsman, soldier, businessman, and patriarch. But together, they formed the foundation of what Five Saints stands for: family, courage, and community.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Every bottle that leaves our distillery carries a legacy. One rooted in family, loss, and resilience.

Our founder, John George, grew up in Upstate New York in the 1960s and 70s, the son of John Sr., a respected New York State Trooper. His father was known in their small town as fair, kind, and dedicated to his community, the kind of man whose uniform meant something bigger and greater than himself. When John Sr. passed away on the job suddenly from carbon monoxide poisoning, John was just 11. He had unknowingly backed his police car into a snow bank, a mistake that would cost him everything and change their family forever. Three young boys and a mother were left behind.

In that moment, John Sr's three brothers (all four brothers are pictured above with their mother) and a fourth eventual step-father came to fill the space that loss left behind, each in their own way.

The Father

John – New York State Trooper

John served as a state trooper and was known for his fairness, compassion, and work ethic.

The epitaph on his headstone reads:

“Fair and young, just ready to live. Loving and caring, always willing to give.”

Even in death, his legacy of integrity and service shaped the path his sons would walk.

The Outdoorsman

Uncle Joe – World War II Veteran & Woodsman

The eldest brother, Joe was a skilled outdoorsman, hunter, and craftsman. He served his country during World War II and later taught John and his cousins how to survive, adapt, and make do with what they had. “Everything can work,” he’d say, “if you use what’s in front of you.” Those lessons became John’s compass in life and business.

The Firefighter & Craftsman

Uncle Ray – Firefighter, Little Falls, NY

Ray worked as a firefighter in Little Falls and took the role of mentor seriously. He told the boys he could never replace their father, but he’d always be there — and he was. Under his guidance, John learned carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and auto repair — the same hands-on skills that would later help him rebuild the old firehouse that became Five Saints Distilling.

The Businessman

Uncle Bob – U.S. Navy Veteran & Entrepreneur

Bob served in the U.S. Navy before building a successful lumber and building materials company in Upstate New York. He took risks, created jobs, and treated his employees like family. John remembers working at his lumber yard during college — and the way Uncle Bob’s example taught him courage, discipline, and the value of risk-taking.

The Fifth Father

John “Giovanni” – The Steadfast Gentleman

Years later, John’s mother remarried a man named Giovanni — gentle, wise, and endlessly kind. He embraced John and his brothers as his own, finishing what the others had started: raising them with love, patience, and integrity.

A Legacy

The name Five Saints isn’t symbolic, it’s literal.

“Most people have one father,” John says. “I was blessed with five. And by virtue of putting up with me, they’re all saints.”

It’s about five real men who lived by service, loyalty, and love. Each gave John something different: courage, creativity, craftsmanship, faith, and perseverance.

When John founded Five Saints Distilling, he built it as a tribute to them, and to all who serve quietly and faithfully in their own communities. The distillery gives back to first responders and their families, carrying the legacy of those five men forward with every pour.

The Five Saints are gone, but their spirit remains. In every bottle, every toast, and every act of service, their story continues.
